Tour Description
Glacier Journey: Witness Iceland's Largest Glacier Before It Vanishes
Join us for this precious journey in a race against time. As global glaciers continue to melt at an alarming rate of approximately one trillion tons per year, the icy spectacle before your eyes is quietly transforming. This is not just a tour, but a unique opportunity to commune with ice formations dating back millennia and witness the evolving history of our planet.
Vatnajökull, covering 9% of Iceland's landmass, is undergoing unprecedented melting. Scientific research predicts that this immense ice cap will shrink by nearly half by 2100. By 2200, most of Iceland's glaciers may be lost forever. Since the year 2000, the ice volume in glacial outlets has already decreased by 15-50%.

Your journey begins in Höfn. Please arrive at the meeting point 20 minutes before departure to meet your experienced glacier guide. We will provide a full set of professional equipment: crampons, helmet, ice axe, and waterproof hiking boots and protective clothing as needed.
Once equipped, we will embark on an approximately 20-minute hike to the glacier's edge. The path to the ice itself reads like a geological history book: you will see bedrock landscapes shaped by glacial movement, clear moss lines on mountain slopes marking historical ice levels, and meltwater lakes holding the last remnants of disappearing ice.
Upon stepping onto the glacier, your guide will instruct you in safe walking techniques. Then, we will venture deep into one of Vatnajökull's most captivating outlets—Falljökull. Over the next three hours, you will explore this breathtaking glacial world: traverse deep blue crevasses, observe mysterious moulins, discover unique "glacier mice" moss balls, and admire massive icefalls. Conditions permitting, you may even encounter ephemeral ice caves.
Difficulty Level:
This hike requires no technical skills but does involve steep and rocky sections. A good level of physical fitness and basic hiking experience is recommended.
Important Notes:
Temperatures on the glacier are only a few degrees colder than at the Skaftafell Terminal, but wind conditions are significantly stronger due to higher elevation. We provide a 15-minute shared shuttle transfer to the glacier starting point—reducing environmental impact while ensuring efficient access.

We wish you an unforgettable experience on this vanishing expanse of ice.
